What bookkeeping actually is

sounds like a profession. In practice it’s one small habit: every time money comes in or goes out, you write down three things - the date, the amount, and what it was for.

That’s it. Do it consistently and everything people find intimidating about accounting - the statements a lender asks for, your tax numbers, knowing whether you made money this month - is just this record, rearranged.

A few real transactions:

  • Mar 3 - $500 in - paid by a customer for a job
  • Mar 5 - $42 out - supplies from the hardware store
  • Mar 8 - $120 out - monthly software subscription

You don’t need an accounting background to do this. You need a place to put each transaction and a nudge in the right direction when you’re unsure. That’s the whole job Parline does - and every unfamiliar word in the app has a definition one tap away.
